Novatec rear hub destroyed. Now what?
Novatec rear hub destroyed. Now what?
Hello guys,
My back sprocket felt like it had a little gap, so I went and bought some tools to tighten it up, but before I tighten it up, I took both the lockring and the fixed sprocket just to check on the threads and... f*ck me. The Novatec sprocket threads are practically gone (2nd hand).
The hub is this one
I want to ask you for some advice on what to do next.
1 - just buy a new hub, sprocket and lock ring. I want to buy the same model but can't find anywhere to buy it online except for ebay. Any advice?
2 - I've heard one can actually glue the sprocket and lock-ring to the hub when this happens. Have you heard of this? Can it work?
3 - I've also heard there's a way to reuse the freewheel side of the hub with a fixed sprocket. Sounds like bullshit to me.
Any ideas or suggestions of what to do/buy and where?
tack!

Why not ebay?
Re: Novatec rear hub destroyed. Now what?
Actually the ones at e-bay do not have 24 holes option

Use Loctite for cylindrical bonding. Any of the varieties will work. #641 is often used - it's not one of the strongest but it's possible to remove/switch the drev later. It "should" be strong enough... I would go for the 641 myself. #638 is definitely strong enough, but it might be hard to remove the drev later. Just glue the drev, not the lockring.
Varför i h-e står det drev istället för c-o-g när jag sparar???
edit: didn't realize they stopped selling loctite in small bottles, it's rather expensive. should be a cheap alternative somewhere I guess, but I don't know what. Maybe take the wheel to a toolshop with a påse kanelbullar and ask for a few drops Loctite...

Re: Novatec rear hub destroyed. Now what?
Hi guys,
I've ended up buying a set from this italian seller at ebay. It was the only seller with a 24h rear hub I could find, except for another Chinese seller.
Basically the Italian guy got the package here in 2 days flat (quite impressive) opposed to the Chinese seller that was predicted to arrive july 18th. So I basically payed almost the double but I have it with me already.
Now comes the second challange:
I've been looking online for videos about how to lace a wheel and I must confess it got me scared. Now I'm wondering if I can take the hub away and build it again without ending with a squared wheel. Do you guys have any advice on that? Is it as hard as it looks or should I just take it to a shop?
PS: by the way Naugas, thanks for the tip. I might try it out actually. Got nothing to lose, since the sprocket is actually staying in place pretty well. Might actually work.

Lacing the wheel is easy, truing it a bit more difficult but not impossible. If you know your way around tools and can follow instructions i.e. Sheldon I'd say just go for it. I'm still riding the first wheels i ever built four years ago.

Yes indeed. I should've explained better. The lacing part is not what worries me, it's the truing.
Use sheldon's guide and hook something up to your rear fork to measure, rubber bands, tape, toothpicks, rulers, whatever. You'll figure it out.

I'll give it a go this weekend, maybe even document it for the forum.
